PART 1: By Laurent Joly
The EuroDipCon 2009 took place the last weekend in Bonn, in a very beautiful place. I had a lot of fun there, like during my whole trip which brings me from Stockhom to Bonn, via Bonn and Verona :)
First, the balticon. I want to thank Dennis for the huge work he done to organise and run the BaltiCon. We had a lot of fun during the whole cruise (including in my game, even if I got no points at all!!). For people who missed it, you cannot imagine how great was that weekend. In fact, some people said that there was a tournament of diplomacy won by Niclas Perez. Reality or not? Did I really finished last with no points? Did we really dance during a huge part of the night? Did we really drink some really strange thing? Did we really see the sun at 3am? A lot of good question, isn't it?
Now, the EDC. I want to thanks all the people who involved in the organisation : André Ilievics, Stefan Unger, Daniel Leinich, Dirk Brüggemann. (If I forgot someone, please don't blame me. 29 players attended and, finally the winner was André Ilievics (after his 3rd place in Como and his 2nd place in Utrecht).
The whole weekend was perfect (excluding the rain the last day, but that wasn't a problem).
A lot of people attended to the Hobby meeting and we had a lot of discussion about the hobby and we can do for it. I invited all the people who wants to write a report or an article about the last tournaments they attended, to contact me. If someone wants to write an article about : "what is a convention / tournament of Diplomacy. How funny it can be", to contact me. I wanted to add it to the European website : http://eurodip.nuxit.net
Finally, I'm really happy to announce that the next EuroDipCon will take place in Paris (I'm working to find the exact location) at the end of august or 1st weekend of september, during the WAC Paris. More details soon.
The committee of this tournament is : Nathan barnes, Mark Zoffel, Daniel Lester, Cyrille Sevin, Xavier Blanchot, Laurent Joly.
I hope that everyone went back to home safely and I wish a good tournament to all the people who goes in Austria this weekend for the Felix Austria Tournament.
Laurent

PART 2: By Toby Harris

Frank Bacher: “anyone want a taxi?”
|
Getting to Bonn was not easy; a drive of 300km from Cornwall (where I was staying beforehand) to Birmingham airport for 5am meant no sleep. Then two flights, two trains, three tram rides and a “Frank Bacher” taxi meant that by the time I’d arrived I was totally knackered.
And all that only to be attacked from all sides in the first game. (?But you are Toby Harris ? I have to attack?)
But this is what Diplomacy is like, and I?ve learned to accept it. So a five centre finish in round one wasn?t so bad. And I still managed to be the second last person to bed ... last man standing was (obviously!) Igor Kurt.
Round two was much better: 14 centres as Germany. And after a poor result from the third round I sneaked into the final in 7th place.
|

”I have a coin you can use ?”
((Yann Clouet and Andre Ilievics share the Best Diplomat award. The prize is awarded on the toss of a coin.))
|
The Final

“Tobby, I am your friend so do not come north with army Moscow”.
((Gwen Maggi ? always my friend))
|
The final table was a good mix of nationalities; one each from the Netherlands, the UK, Russia, Italy and France, with two from Germany. Drawing Russia, I played my favourite opening: A(War) does not move to Galicia. And with Andre agreeing the same as Austria, I explored the other wondrous options:
With the hungry Gwen Maggi as England, War-Ukr, Mos-StP was very tempting. Very tempting indeed!
And War-Sil was also very tempting; sometimes you just know you won’t get Sweden even when Germany (Marco Ferrari) says “all is cool”!
With crazyman Frank Oschmiansky as Turkey, the final thought was War-Ukr, Mos-Sev and Sev-Rum.
In the end A(War) just held. This gave every neighbour a chance to prove themselves worthy. All did.
That was until the Fall when Germany did indeed bounce me in Sweden, let me in for Spring 1902 and supported England (Gwen) there in the Fall of 1902.
This G/E alliance was quite foreseeable and I did make clear at this point to both Gwen and Marco that if I lost Sweden then they may not like what would follow. Not just in 1903, but the natural fallout for the rest of the game. (Pascal’s Triangle!)
Germany and England stayed allied and put pressure on Rene’s France, along with the Italian (Alex Lebedev) who joined in the three-way assault. So by 1904 / 1905 Gwen was flying.
In fact Gwen looked sure to win, because at one point there were no German fleets (disbanded after my fleet sneaked into Kiel by way of retaliation) and the closest French fleet was in the West Med, defending against Italy.
All that was left to stop the run-away Gwen was my sole fleet in Kiel.
|

“Tobby, it iz not fair! You always attack me to stop me from winning!”
|
But then something went wrong for Gwen; Marco started to defend properly, Rene pulled back a little, and I kept the pressure up with armies in Northern Russia.
And to top it all Andre?s Austria went for the kill, stealing Naples and Venice from Italy and taking Munich to make a 3-centre GRAB! A great stab.
It was now 1906 with 4 turns to play. Andre had become a clear favourite. Rather than throw all I had against Andre, I tried to race him instead. Sneaking into Armenia and stealing Norway from Gwen was a good start. And in the final year I moved (for the first time in the game) an army into Rumania to steal Serbia from Andre at the end.
Because Andre was a few centres clear, he was ok for me to take Serbia. What he didn?t spot was that I only needed to order F(BLA) ? Bul in the final turn to steal the championship! However, I didn?t spot it until after the game either.
So Andre topped the board and becomes the new European Champion. Looking back at the game, the moves, the negotiations and everything else ... he was without any doubt in my mind the best player on the day. Congratulations.

PART 3: By Yann Clouet
One of my favorite moments for this EDC happened in the Sunday morning round which I skipped to rest a bit. I was watching the Fall resolution from a game, Daniel L. was visibly happy after winning the guessing game which eliminated Stefan U. So much that he high-fived Frank B. loudly. Then Daniel, as if he suddenly realised Stefan was still on the board turned toward him and gave him a pity dog look and served him a so natural "sorry". Stefan answered : "oh yes, you really look sorry !". So I skipped in and asked : "Can I be sorry with you ?" and then high-fived myself Daniel and Frank. Later we played a short board game including a chance element (dice throwing) with Frank and Stefan and Stefan kept on taking risks and being greedy. So every time the dices didn't end his way we said "Sorry" and high fived loudly again ! :)
Here's another one : in the first game I played, James Hardy kept on talking to me about "Dirk", but I knew there was no "Dirk" on our board. Then I finally realised that "Dirk" was in fact Stefan U. (him again). So I agreed with James every time we would talk to "Stefan" we would call him "Dirk". I sticked to the plan ((it’s “stuck”, Yann!)), but it raised questions from the other players. So I explained to "Ronald" (in fact Rene V.R.), "Sasha" (in fact Igor K.), "Gabriel" (in fact Vincent D.), "Davide" (in fact Giussepe) not to worry, it was just a little game between "Toby" (errr James ?) and me (you know, "Cyrille" !) . After that, I fear the game became a bit messy all sort of first names flying around.
((... and all because tele-tubby Hardy got one name wrong?))

The EuroDipCon 2009 will take place in Bonn from July 31 to August 2nd.
As usual, the German hobby will organise one of the most enjoyable event of the year, so don't miss it and register as soon as possible.
From André Ilievics :
We will play four rounds at a house called "Haus Annaberg" near Bonn, which is cosy and friendly place.
You can see some pictures of it at http://www.annaberg.de/bilder.htm.
It's definitely a great place to create a friendly and good atmosphere.
We offer packages starting from 66 € (6-bed-dorm) up to 109€ (single room) including tournament fees, free internet access, dinner on Friday evening, breakfast, lunch and dinner on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday morning.
The convention begins Friday, 31/07/2009 and ends Sunday, 02/08/2009.
The first round starts Friday at about 4 p.m. and the last rounds is sunday morning at about 10 a.m. You can check in Friady starting from about noon.
Sunday's round will have a top board, and it will be possible to get through it even if you miss Friday's round.
We will have plenty of time for other games, hanging around or for visiting Bonn or Cologne. And I'm sure the will be some guys going out for night life as well. ;-)
The best place to fly to is Cologne/Bonn airport.
But it might also possible for a limited number of people to give you a lift from Frankfurt to the venue.
If you prefer to fly to Hahn, the low cost airlines airport, there is a bus shuttle to cologne and from the you will have a connections to Annaberg, but this will be very time consuming.
If you have an questions write us an email at edc@diplomacy-bund.de; we will be lucky to help you.
